Currency
The official currency of Peru is the NUEVO SOL "New Sun" (S/.). Although most business is done with the sol, it has become more and more common to use dollars to buy machineries, appliances, furniture, real estate, motors and some services, especially in tourism.
A Nuevo Sol "New Sun" consists of 100 cents. There are bills worth 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 Nuevos Soles and coins worth 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles and 0.50, 0.20 and 0.10 cents.
FOREIGN CURRENCY EXCHANGE
There are no restrictions about exchanging foreign currency. American dollars are accepted without major fees in the hotels, markets and supermarkets in Lima and other major cities in Peru.
To exchange money, the most advisable thing to do is to go to official banks or foreign exchange offices.
Avoid changing on the street, because they will not give you a receipt, in spite of the fact that many of them are registered in the municipalities from different districts.
You must keep in mind that you will be charged more if you try to exchange currency other than the American dollar.
