Homestay

Our homestay program aims to give both local families and tourists a unique and rewarding experience while also improving the economy of remote Andean communities. We work with several families in small communities near Cusco such as Huayacocha, Huarocondo and others. By matching tourists with local families in these communities, both groups are able to share parts of their culture. Tourists are able to experience a new way of life, learning about and living with the food, religion, and customs of farmers in these villages. Local people are also empowered and learn to value their Incan identity when they share their way of life with tourists.

Wayki Trek will match you with a family for the number of days that you choose. Your family will provide you with traditional Andean food and invite you to take part in their daily activities. These activities will include feeding and taking care of the animals, farming and helping their children with their homework, among others.

We encourage you to undertake volunteer service while you are living with your local family. This will provide for an even more rewarding experience and benefit the community in a more profound way.

Volunteer with us.

Tips for staying with your local family

  • It is highly recommended that you speak at least basic Spanish. If you lack basic conversational Spanish skills, it can be hard to adjust.
  • Because many towns do not have grocery stories, people in rural communities have a repetitive diet. They eat soups, potatoes, corn and quinoa for many consecutive meals. Please be aware that you will be eating the same foods that your family eats and to expect a small variety.
  • Note that many small communities have very limited water. While there will be plenty of drinking water, you will not be able to shower everyday, nor can we guarantee that your family will have a toilet.
  • If you would like to greet your family with a gift, we advise you stop in the market in Cusco and buy fruits, vegetables, rice, sugar, or other food items that your family can cook with.

TESTIMONIALS

Inca Trail 4 days
March 17, 2011

Jose was a very knowledgeable guide. His history lessons were very interesting and is always willing to help others along the trail. Couldn’t have made it without him. The food was nothing I have ever tasted and experienced. Highly recommend. The porters provided the best service I’ve ever experienced in any industry.  Amazed by their hard work along the trail. Humbled by their work. Equipment all functional. Amazing food flavors and fresh ingredients always something new each day. The train ride was and added tour of the mountains. We enjoyed the trip very much thanks to a great experience by Jose and the porters.  Highly recommend their services.
