Duration: 4 hours approximately. / Daily departures.
First we will visit the "San Pedro" food market. This is the market where the locals shop for all kinds of products for the preparation of their daily diet like vegetables, potatoes, fruits, meats, spices, cereals, breads, etc. You can buy all kinds of local food, and we can also learn a bit about the local customs and idiosyncrasies. Then we will drive to the ancient Temple of the Sun "Qoricancha"*. Here you can see the detailed architecture maintained intact. Inside of the temple you will see smaller temples dedicated to the moon, rainbow, stars, and lightning and thunder among others. Today the church of Santo Domingo is located on top of the temple. Then we will walk through the traditional streets where each of the streets always have something to tell and contain many mysteries (myths, legends, and tales) of the city. We will go through Aqllaywasi (among the virgins of the sun) which is now the Santa Catalina convent. Afterwards we will walk to the 12-sided stone (Hatun Rumiyoq) remaining intact and currently used as a museum. This street is an example of the great predominance of Incan architecture and their incredible masonry, then we will visit the typical artisan area, home to the great artisans from the Inca era to present day with a long tradition in textiles, ceramics, metallurgy, and other art forms. Finally we will end up in one of the city's "picanterías" (local restaurants) to enjoy dishes that delight the city.
*Qoricancha, The convent was built on the spectacular Qoricancha ‘site of gold’. This was the most important temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun (Inti) and whose walls were lined with solid sheets of gold. All that remains now is the fine stonework, as the conquistadors looted the rest. Qoricancha was also an observatory, where priests kept track of major celestial events.
