The nucleus or central point of the city of Cusco is its Plaza de Armas (formerly known as the Plaza del Guerrero). According to various historians, it was a swamp that the Incas dried up and turned into the religious and administrative center of the empire. There the Incas built palaces and temples of great importance. After the conquest of the Spanish, churches and houses were built to take a shape similar to how it looks today. Important historical events took place there, such as the execution of Túpac Amaru II, a Peruvian martyr.
Currently there are clothing, crafts, jewelry and restaurants shops around.
