Salkantay Trek - 5 days
Get ready for a life-changing adventure on the trek that was named "one of the 25 best treks in the world" by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine. The Salkantay trek is also highly enjoyable because it is not nearly as busy as the over-booked Inca Trail and for this reason it is much more exclusive, less touristy, and will result in a much richer cultural experience for our participants. This trek was formerly an Incan trade route for coca and potatoes and Apu Salkantay is the highest peak of the Willkapampa Mountain Range with its' highest point reaching an elevation of 20,574 feet (6,271 m). Salkantay was considered by the Inca to be a deity that controlled weather and fertility in the region west of Cusco and its' name comes from the Quechua word sallqa usually translated as savage, uncivilized, or wild hence the mountain is translated as "savage mountain".
Availability
Salkantay 5D does not have the same regulations as the Inca trail in regards to the number of people and permits allowed. The transfer will pick you up early in the morning from the hotel in a private van and will take you to the start of your trek at Soraypampa; travel time to this location is around 4 hrs. During the trip, we will see some quaint Andean towns until we get to Killarumiyuc known as “The Incan Astronomy Birthplace” and where the Agricultural Calendar stands out. Later we will enjoy a delicious breakfast and will continue to Mollepata “Little Town”, where we will make a brief stop to explore the streets and purchase some things that we will need for the trek. After 1 ½ hours of more valleys surrounded by majestic mountains and icy mountain tops we will arrive to Soraypampa, where we will see in the distance the Apu Salkantay. Once here, we will decide the route to take for our trek based on the physical fitness of our participants.
- First Option: Ascend the mountain through the left side with a chance to see the beauty of the Andean lake and other mountains that surround it. Finally, we will descend using the same route and take our usual path to our campsite.
- Second Option: To skip the ascension of the mountain and follow the traditional route that will take us directly to our campsite.
On the way to our campsite we will see local people and learn about their traditional lifestyle where the livestock and agriculture has great importance and the reason why it is still practiced nowadays. As we continue we will get closer and closer to one of the most important mountains in the south of Peru, the Grand Salkantay, known as “The Andes Guardian”. Afterwards, we will keep ascending through a winding trail until the Soyrococha Lake, the place where we will stay for the night.
- Distance:7 Km.
- Walking Hours: 4-5 hours
- Low Altitude:4200 m. / 13780 Ft. (Trail Head, Soraypampa)
- High Altitude:4480 m. / 14698 Ft. (Soyrococha)

After waking up surrounded by the mountains and lake, we will have a fortifying breakfast and will start with our trek ascending gradually for approximately 1 ½ hrs. towards the highest point of the trail. The Salkantay pass (4,600 m.a.s.l.). From here, we will have a scenic view of the Andes, its’ mountain chains, glaciers, lakes, and brooks. You will feel closer to heaven, and a more profound connection with nature sensing the true magic and energy of the Andes.
After a well-deserved rest, we will descend the mountain slowly until we reach Huayracmachay (4,000 m.a.s.l.) leaving behind the Salkantay. After 2 hours we will arrive at our lunch stop. Later we will continue descending through an area belonging to the highest jungle part known as “Andenes” (3,800 m.a.s.l.) Here, we will be able to see vast vegetation, bamboo forest and a great variety of wild orchids, bromeliads, and other flowers typical from the area. Soon, the second campsite is at reach: Collpapampa (2,950 m.a.s.l.)
- Distance:16 Km.

- Low Altitude:2950 m. / 9678 Ft.
- High Altitude:4600 m. / 14993 Ft.

This is an easier trek through the upper jungle part or yunga, where we will see vast flora and fauna, especially fruit, coffee, tea, and bamboo plantations. The weather is humid and warm which is characteristic of the semi-tropical area. Along the way we will also see some communities that still practice the Incan traditions. On this day we will have the chance to participate in daily activities of these communities such as coffee, avocado, and granadilla plantations*. We will share in their traditions and their food. It will be a day full of culturally significant learning experiences. Our campsite Lucmabamba (1,850 m.a.s.l) usually has much warmer weather as it is in the wet part of the forest.

After a delicious breakfast, we will start our trek following the traditional Inca Trail. From here we will be able to finally see the Machu Picchu citadel on the right, Huayna Picchu on the left, a portion of the traditional Inca Trail, and the Urubamba River that goes winding throughout the valley. After a brief moment to rest, we will descend for 3 hours through a winding trail between narrow and slippery spaces until we reach the valley (hydroelectric building). Here we will take the train to Aguas Calientes to a hotel where we will spend the night. Perhaps you would like to visit the Aguas Calientes Hot Springs in the evening.

Altitude Sickness; some of the symptoms are: headache and nausea. There are some over the counter medication (pills) that help to minimize the symptoms of this problem, such as Glucosa Coramina, Aspirina, Diamox, Soroichi Pill, Acetazolamida, among others. If the symptoms persist, the use of oxygen is the next step. Under this circumstances, we have the equipment and staff ready to assist our trekkers.
Stomach Pain; It is recommended to drink between 3-4 liters of water per day. Your body will need this to stay hydrated. It is specially recommended hot drinks like, coca leaves tea. Also, soups, vegetables and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy). Candy, chocolates, cookies and fruits are also a good option. In general, all food that is easy to digest. Do not have drink alcohol or smoke.
Try to sleep at least 8 hours and do not exercise too much. Keep your body in good temperature wearing warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold weather. During the adjusting to the altitude there is a general rule to follow: eat what is necessary and drink plenty of liquids.

In fact, most of the times that we have had the participation of a minor in our treks, they have adjusted better compared to adults. However, you must consider that any type of treks demand a lot of physical strength and endurance. Therefore, parents taking their children along should be aware of how extenuating this activity can be for adults and young participants as well.
In order to give peace of mind to those parents, we suggest to hire the services of an extra mule/horse for the minor’s personal items and himself if necessary.
It is equally important to keep hydrated during the trekking. Our staff on the trail will supply of this important element. It is also helpful to advise our staff about the minor needs so the tour guide can program the rest stops along the trail for a bit longer. All these are recommendations that WAYKI TREK gives in order to make a smooth experience on the trial, however they are not mandatory.
The use of both items is extremely necessary, remember that Peru is close to the equatorial line; therefore the sun rays are stronger due to the altitude. Many of our passengers have never experience the sun like that and the risk for sunburns is serious. Take along a hat, sun block for face and lips, sun glasses of good quality to protect your eyes.
There is no restrictions in regards to the physical fitness. However it is recommended that you are in good shape for any trek. Also, we suggest you to visit the foot doctor, as your feet should be in the best conditions possible before the trek. If you are a regular blood donor, please make sure you do your last blood donation 8 to 10 weeks before your trip.

Most people travel to Cusco by air. Please note that the Cusco airport operates national flights only. Therefore, if you come directly from abroad to Lima, you are going to need to pick up your bags at the airport and re-check them for your flight to Cusco. There are four airlines that fly back and forth between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, Star Peru, and Peruvian Airlines. All of these airlines offer similar schedules and flight services, but we generally recommend LATAM Airlines. You also have the option of travelling to Cusco by land. Please keep in mind that it takes approximately 24 hours to get from Lima to Cusco. If you have any questions or want more information on the matter, please consult with WAYKI’s sales representatives.
While you can stay at any hotel in Cusco, it is becoming increasingly difficult to travel in the city by car. In WAYKI TREK, we commit ourselves to picking you up from your place of lodging, be it in the city center or in the surrounding areas, specially now that it has become increasingly popular to stay in apartments or in rooms within houses. In the event that our vehicle cannot access your place of lodging, our staff will help and orient you to the nearest point with vehicular access.
Of course. You can stay anywhere in the Sacred Valley. However, you must keep in mind that the INKA TRAIL route is Cusco-Urubamba-Ollantaytambo. If your hotel is located in this route, we will coordinate a specific time for your pick-up (at no additional cost). If your hotel is located outside this route, you must contact WAYKI’s sales representatives to coordinate a time for your pick-up (at an additional cost).
If you do not wish to stay in Cusco, we strongly suggest you stay in Ollantaytambo. No. However, walking sticks are always useful for hikers, specially when completing this trek. This is because there are a lot of trails that vary in altitude and are not always straight. Thus when you are in these trails, using walking sticks can really help relieve the accumulated pressure in your knees as well as help you climb the mountain. In addition, our walking sticks are adjustable. As such, when you are not using them, you can shorten the walking sticks so that they do not bother you. For those who want to bring their own walking sticks, make sure that they have rubber tips or park rangers will not allow you to use them. In case you forgot to bring them from your home country, you may purchase rubber tips in Cusco.
