Today we share excellent news for the tourism sector and the airline industry in Peru: the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced that international flights could restart in August 2020, before the Phase 4 of the national economic reactivation plan.
Initially, the economic reactivation plan established the restart of the international flights in the Phase 4, the last stage for the reactivation of economic activities in the national territory, but due to progress in compliance with sanitary regulations and protocols against COVID-19 , and to support the recovery of the tourism sector highly affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, plans are underway to bring forward the restart of these flights, whenever is possible and when the conditions allow this.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) said that a pilot plan for the restart of international flights is being evaluated, and it is likely that the Cusco airport will be chosen to carry it out. The respective authority in Cusco seeks that the Cusco region may be opening international routes with Bolivia, Chile and Colombia. The proposal then is to start with Cusco and later, more likely during the Phase 4, to restart other international flights gradually.
It is worth mentioning that in order to restart international flights, there must be an agreement between the parties involved and open the borders between the participating countries must be opened, in addition to having an adequate control to face COVID-19 and avoid the risk of contagion.
In this regard, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has confirmed that all the biosafety protocols for airports throughout the country are already in place. Sanitary protocols for airports and airlines are in the validation phase by the Ministry of Health (MINSA).
On the other hand, the Ministry has reconfirmed the restart of domestic flights during the first half of July, because the necessary measures have already been taken at all airports and all the biosafety protocols confirm this.
Both the operators, as well as the Jorge Chávez International Airport, have already implemented all the protocols and with the airlines the stage of validation of protocols will soon be coming to an end.
It is worth remembering that the Peruvian Government ordered the complete closure of international borders in mid-March 2020 to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Likewise, the transportation of passengers by land, sea and air in the inside Peru was suspended.
To date, 3 months have passed since then, and great progress has been made to combat the spread of Coronavirus and face this pandemic.
For this reason and for all that has been said, at WAYKI TREK we are very attentive to news from the Government on the reopening of international borders.
We are very pleased to know that the Airport of the Cusco region could be the first chosen to implement a possible pilot plan to reactivate international flights, covering air routes to our neighboring countries of Bolivia, Chile and Colombia. By now the only thing we can do is wait.
We will continue informing!
