This tradition of the day of the comadres and compadres, comes from an ancient ritual, a custom that was carried out in the time of the Incas.
It consisted of choosing tutors or those responsible for the children as godparents (according to the chronicler Guamán Poma de Ayala, in the 17th century).
As in other parts of the world, this festival is like a carnival. It is characterized by costumes, characters, games and parades in the streets.
When is the day of the comadres and compadres?
The day of the compadres and comadres is celebrated two Thursdays before the carnivals (between February and March) in Cusco.
In the Andes, the compadre or comadre are very loved and appreciated characters in a family.
They represent a second paternity and are present at the most important moments such as baptism, communion, graduation or marriage.
The party is lived with emotion! People have fun throwing colored mixtures or powders.
In the more traditional neighborhoods you can see dolls of characters that portray “los compadres” but also satire among the parishioners.
