ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible tourism that respects and protects the Andean nature

At Wayki Trek, we understand that exploring the Andes is not only a transformative experience, it is also an opportunity to care for and honor the environment that welcomes us. Our environmental commitment goes beyond operations; it is part of our identity. We implement concrete, sustainable actions that reflect our values and our deep respect for the Pachamama (Mother Earth).

Andean Botanical Garden – Wayki House

At our Wayki House in Huayllaccocha, we cultivate a botanical garden of traditional medicinal plants, sharing ancestral knowledge passed down through generations in our communities. This space is a living classroom where the natural wisdom of the Andes is preserved and shared.

Reforestation with Native Species

In response to glacier retreat and soil erosion, we’ve developed reforestation programs using native species such as the Q’ueuña, a resilient Andean tree that thrives between 3,500 and 4,500 meters above sea level. Through partnerships with rural communities, we reforest open areas and mountains, promoting sustainable development and ecosystem recovery. Many of our travelers participate in this effort during their treks, leaving a positive footprint on their journey through Peru.

Use of Llamas as Traditional Transport

On routes like Lares, we promote the use of llamas as a sustainable alternative to horses, helping minimize terrain erosion. This also supports the revival of ancestral practices such as the raising of auquénidos (Andean camelids), in partnership with local communities. We’ve allocated protected spaces and training programs to ensure the responsible use of llamas, reviving this tradition in harmony with the environment.

Biodregadable Products

All cleaning and kitchen products we use, from soaps to utensils, are biodegradable, recyclable, and environmentally safe. This practice minimizes our impact during each expedition, keeping campsites and trails clean and healthy.

Solid Waste Management

On all our treks, we implement a strict waste collection, separation, and transport system. We use color-coded bags to separate organic, inorganic, industrial, and sanitary waste. Our staff is trained to ensure that every type of waste is properly handled and that nothing is left behind on the trail.

Wayki Trek doesn’t just guide you through Inca history, we invite you to protect its natural legacy.

We are active participants in sustainable tourism in Peru. We walk with you along the path and toward a better future for the planet.
