Before starting the hike, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the traditional practices of Andean villages. We’ll visit the community that our porters come from to meet their families, who will involve us in their daily agricultural activities, treat us to their food, and show us their traditional dance and music. You’ll be able to see how many Inca traditions have been carried down through the generations to the present day.
Here we will find all kinds of food supplies, as well as vegetables, cereals, medicinal plants, grocery stores, clothing items, and much more. Overall, the market attracts the majority of the local urban population, who go there daily to purchase food for themselves and their families. During our visit, we will be able to appreciate the commercial interactions amongst locals, which largely derive from traditional customs and practices.
Many Andean individuals still practice weaving. In our tour, we will have the opportunity to learn about their ancestral weaving techniques.
In our porters’ communities, we will partake in their daily activities, mostly organized around agriculture, and learn about their ancestral sowing and harvesting techniques.
You will have the opportunity to teach English to the children. At the same time, they will teach you Quechua, the official language of the Incas, which is spoken throughout different rural populations in the Andes. Many customs and traditions are still upheld due to the prevalence of Quechua.
In some communities, you will have the opportunity to dress like a local and experience being part of them.
Our communities still uphold the richness of Andean cuisine, the basis of development of one of the most important cultures in South America. Dishes include: quinoa soup, corn soup, chuño or moraya (dehydrated potato) soup, tarwi with charqui (dried alpaca or llama meat, some communities use mutton)
