Acclimatization in Cusco Before Starting High-Altitude Treks

Embarking on a trek above 4,000 meters above sea level—such as the Inca Trail, Salkantay, Lares, or other high-mountain routes—is an extraordinary experience, but also a true physiological challenge for anyone living below 2,000 meters. As you ascend, atmospheric pressure decreases, and your body receives less oxygen with each breath. Without proper acclimatization, visitors may experience symptoms of altitude sickness—headaches, fatigue, nausea, or insomnia. In more serious cases, it can prevent you from continuing your trek. That’s why we offer a specially designed itinerary to help your body and mind adjust gradually and safely. Through gentle hikes, connection with nature, and meaningful cultural experiences, this plan strengthens your physical endurance, activates your altitude metabolism, and—most importantly—aligns your spirit with the Andean world before the great adventure begins.

3 Days of Connection, Adaptation, and Preparation

DAY 1: Cultural Cusco – Gentle Start at Altitude

Elevation: 3,400 to 3,500 m | Walk duration: 3–4 hours
A soft landing in the sacred city of the sun. Begin your acclimatization journey with a light and enriching walk through the most iconic corners of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Wander through the vibrant San Pedro Market, full of colors and local aromas. Visit the Qoricancha—Temple of the Sun—and lose yourself in the cobblestone streets of San Blas, the artistic and mystical heart of the city. This first contact doesn’t just awaken your body gently; it also stirs your senses to the ancestral energy that flows through this sacred land. A perfect day for walking, observing, sharing, and letting your body begin to adapt—naturally and without pressure.

DAY 2: Sacred Valley – Nature, Spirit, and Living Culture

Elevation: 3,400 to 3,600 m | Light hiking + transportation
Sacred landscapes that prepare body and mind. Day two leads you into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where temples and landscapes offer both beauty and healing. Start with a guided visit to the ceremonial complexes of Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay, and discover how Inca architecture was deeply interwoven with nature and cosmic understanding.Later, you’ll visit Cochahuasi Sanctuary, a conservation center for iconic Andean wildlife like the majestic condor. The day ends in the colorful Pisac artisan market, where handmade art and rural life offer a relaxed, sensory-rich experience, perfect for staying oxygenated and expanding your awareness.

DAY 3: Pisac & Porters’ Community – A Return to Andean Roots

Elevation: 3,400 to 3,900 m | Walk duration: 3–4 hours
Rituals, ancestral knowledge, and community life in the Andes. This final day blends moderate physical activity with deep cultural immersion. Begin with a panoramic walk to the Pisac archaeological site, nestled among ancient agricultural terraces, sacred rivers, and guardian mountains. The hike helps activate your breathing, strengthen your legs, and complete your acclimatization process. Then, journey to Paru Paru, a community of Inca Trail porters, where you’ll be welcomed into daily life. Participate in traditional farming, natural dye weaving, Andean music, and a ceremony to Pachamama (Mother Earth). This final ritual aligns your energy, honors the land, and seals your spiritual preparation for the days ahead.
