Why is there a capacity limit and how are spaces distributed?
4D / 5D500spaces / day
- Trekkers (tourists)
- Guides
- Porters & cooks
2D250spaces / day
- Trekkers (tourists)
- Guides
- Support staff
Not all 500 are for travelers. By law, guides, cooks and porters are deducted from the same daily quota, so the spots left for trekkers are far fewer, and they sell out months ahead.
One quota, several treks. The 500 daily spaces are shared by the 4-Day Inca Trail, the 5-Day Inca Trail and the other treks that join the classic route, such as the Salkantay + Inca Trail 6 Days. Every one of them draws from the same permits, so a sold-out date on the Classic calendar applies to all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if there is no availability for my dates?
Permits are limited by the government, so a sold-out date cannot be reopened. You can move to a nearby date, switch to the Short Inca Trail 2 Days, or choose a route such as Salkantay or Lares, which do not use these permits. Write to us and we will suggest the closest option.
How far in advance should I book my Inca Trail permit?
For May to September, book 5 to 10 months ahead. Other months are more flexible, but popular weekends still sell out early.
Is the Inca Trail open all year round?
The Classic Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance. Check the calendar for the Short Inca Trail dates.
Can I change my dates or transfer my permit?
Government permits are non-refundable and non-transferable, and they are issued in the name on the passport. Date changes depend on availability, so confirm with us before booking.
