Lares Trek to Machu Picchu

Experience the Andes Through the Heart of Its People

This journey is more than just a route to Machu Picchu, it’s a profound experience that connects you with the living soul of the Andes. You’ll walk among sacred mountains and highland communities that welcome you into their homes, share their meals, stories, and their ancestral way of life in harmony with nature.

From the weavers of Wakawasi to the farmlands of Patakancha, you’ll experience a genuine cultural immersion. This safe and well-organized trek blends moderate hiking, breathtaking landscapes, and meaningful human connection.

AVAILABILITY & HOW TO BOOK

A Deep Cultural Experience That Requires Smart Planning

The Lares Trek is a unique alternative route to Machu Picchu that blends hiking, cultural immersion, and direct connection with high-Andean communities. Like other alternative routes, it doesn’t require official permits for the trail itself — offering more flexibility when choosing your travel dates.

However, access to Machu Picchu is strictly regulated by the Ministry of Culture of Peru, and your entire experience depends on securing your entrance ticket in advance.

Every day, Machu Picchu allows a limited number of visitors:

  • 4,500 in low season (Nov – April)
  • 5,600 in high season (May – Oct)

These spaces are in high demand — by travelers arriving by train, the Inca Trail, or alternative routes like Lares. Tickets often sell out quickly, especially for the most complete and popular circuits, leaving only less-desired options available.

We recommend booking 6 to 10 months in advance, especially if you’re planning to travel during high season, school holidays, or long weekends.

If you wish to include optional hikes like Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, availability is even more limited and must be requested well in advance.

With Wayki Trek, You’re Supported from the First Step:

  • We manage your official Machu Picchu entry as soon as your booking is confirmed.
  • We advise you in real time to help select the best dates, circuit, and experience based on your goals.
  • We guarantee premium logistics, personalized service, and ongoing support.
Plan your journey with us and enjoy a seamless adventure where every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to ensure you walk with confidence, safety, and deep connection.

LARES TREK TO MACHU PICCHU 4 DAYS – ITINERARY

A Journey Between Ancestral Wisdom and Inca Wonder

Experience four unforgettable days of genuine connection with high-Andean communities, walk ancient paths surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, and finish your trek with the thrill of discovering Machu Picchu, the sacred jewel of the Andes.

Ideal for travelers seeking cultural immersion, vibrant nature, and transformative moments.

Day 0: Briefing and Wayki Experience (optional).

One day before the start of the hike, your Lares Trek begins with a Preparation Session with your expert guide to answer questions and ensure logistics. This ensures your peace of mind.

Day 1: Cusco – Ankasmarka – Lares Hot Springs – Wakawasi.

Living culture, ancestral history, and dreamlike landscapes

We depart early from Cusco toward the archaeological site of Ankasmarka, one of the largest food storage complexes of the Andean world. Here you’ll learn about the Incas’ sophisticated preservation systems and enjoy a panoramic view of the valley.

Next, we head to the village of Lares, where you can relax in the natural hot springs, perfect for acclimatizing and reconnecting with your body.

After lunch, we begin a gentle hike accompanied by llamas and local muleteers, who serve as both cultural guides and hosts. We follow ancient Inca paths, passing communities that still preserve ancestral traditions.

We arrive in Wakawasi, where a local family welcomes us for the night. Here, you’ll share dinner and learn about traditional weaving, agriculture, and Andean spirituality in an authentic homestay.

Day 2: Wakawasi – Ipsaycocha Pass – Patakancha.

Sacred mountains, personal challenges, and community connection

After a nourishing breakfast with your host family, we hike toward Ipsaycocha Pass (4,420 m), the highest point of the trek. From here, take in stunning views of glaciers, highland lakes, and snow-capped peaks that frame the valley.

Along the trail, you’ll meet alpaca herders and weavers who carry on their traditions and worldview through textile art. We’ll pause for rest and reflection, breathing in the powerful energy of the Apus (sacred mountains).

We end the day in Patakancha, another traditional community that will welcome you warmly. Spend the second night in a family home, sharing stories and learning local customs.

Day 3: Patakancha – Pumamarka – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes.

Living wisdom and connection to Inca heritage

After breakfast, we head toward Willoc, a community renowned for its textiles and strong cultural identity. Here, you’ll observe or take part in traditional weaving and engage in conversations with local artisans.

We then descend to Pumamarka, an Inca archaeological site featuring original terraces and irrigation canals. From there, we continue on foot or by transport to Ollantaytambo, one of the last remaining living Inca towns.

In the afternoon, we board the train to Aguas Calientes, where a comfortable hotel awaits you for the night.

Day 4: Machu Picchu – Cusco.

A spiritual revelation among sacred stones

Early in the morning, we take the bus up to Machu Picchu (2,430 m), one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Your guide will lead you through the most important temples, plazas, and viewpoints, unveiling the mysteries of this magnificent citadel.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore, meditate, or take photos at your own pace. Then, we return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included), followed by your train and private transport back to Cusco.
