Cusco, often called the “Historical Capital of Peru,” brims with history, archaeology, and cultural richness. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains at 3,400 meters (11,200 feet), this city once served as the heart of the Inca Empire and still stands as a vibrant symbol of Peru’s cultural heritage. With its blend of Inca ruins, Spanish colonial architecture, and modern amenities, Cusco remains a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.

Historical Background

Cusco’s history stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in the area as early as 1,000 BC. However, Cusco rose to prominence in the 12th century when it became the capital of the Inca Empire, known as Tawantinsuyu—the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. Visionary leaders like Pachacútec transformed Cusco into the empire’s political, cultural, and religious center. They even designed the city to resemble a puma, symbolizing strength and power, a sacred image in Inca culture.

Archeological Sites

Cusco and its surrounding areas feature some of the world’s most remarkable archaeological sites, each offering a glimpse into the Inca civilization’s grandeur.

1.- Sacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuamán, a massive fortress overlooking Cusco, is one of the most impressive complexes. Built with enormous limestone blocks—some over 100 tons—its stonework showcases exceptional precision. Many believe the fortress’s zigzagging walls represent the teeth of the puma shape that Cusco was designed to emulate. And part of the Inti Raymi tradition is represented there.

2.- Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun)

Qoricancha, or the Temple of the Sun, held immense religious importance in the Inca Empire. Dedicated to Inti, the sun god, the temple was originally covered in gold, reflecting the Incas’ reverence for the sun. The Spanish later built the Convent of Santo Domingo on its foundations. Visitors today can admire the impressive Inca stonework alongside the colonial architecture. Learn more here.

3.- Tambomachay

About 8 kilometers from Cusco, Tambomachay, also known as the “Bath of the Inca,” was likely used for ritual bathing or water worship. It features an intricate system of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls that still function today.

4.- Puka Pukara

Puka Pukara, or “Red Fortress” in Quechua, is a military ruin located near Tambomachay. This site served as a fort and administrative center, providing a strategic viewpoint for controlling access to Cusco. The reddish color of the rocks gives the site its name, and it likely played a key role in protecting the Inca capital.

Points of Interest in Cusco

In addition to its archaeological wonders, Cusco city is filled with cultural landmarks, museums, and colonial architecture.

1.- Cusco City Plaza de Armas

At the city’s center is the Plaza de Armas, a main square that has been Cusco’s social and political hub since Inca times. Originally called Huacaypata, it hosted many important ceremonies. Today, Spanish colonial buildings, including the Cusco Cathedral and the Church of La Compañía de Jesús, surround the plaza.

2.- Cusco Cathedral

Built between 1560 and 1654, Cusco Cathedral is a stunning example of Spanish colonial architecture. Constructed on the foundations of Viracocha’s Inca palace, it symbolizes the Spanish conquest. Inside, visitors can admire religious art created by indigenous artists, as well as intricate gold and silver decorations.

3.- San Blas Neighborhood

The San Blas neighborhood, known for its narrow streets and artisan workshops, has a bohemian atmosphere. It’s an ideal place to explore local crafts, including textiles, jewelry, and pottery. The San Blas Church, built in 1563, is one of Cusco’s oldest churches, featuring a renowned pulpit carved from a single cedar tree.

4.- Museo Inka

Located near the Plaza de Armas, Museo Inka offers a comprehensive overview of Inca history and culture. It houses a vast collection of artifacts, including pottery, textiles, mummies, and an impressive display of Inca quipus, the ancient knot-based recording system..

Cusco’s Surroundings: The Sacred Valley

Just outside Cusco lies the Sacred Valley of the Incas, an area rich in natural beauty and historical significance. The valley features picturesque towns, vibrant markets, and important Inca archaeological sites:

  • Pisac: Known for its agricultural terraces and bustling market.
  • Ollantaytambo: An ancient Inca town with impressive ruins and a fortress overlooking the valley.
