Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic wonders, is not only a testament to the architectural and cultural legacy of the Incas but also a vulnerable ecosystem in need of preservation. In response to the environmental challenges facing the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (HSM) and its buffer zone, the National Service of State-Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) launched the ambitious campaign, “One Million Trees for Machu Picchu”.

What is the project about?

The initiative aims to reforest over 26,933.4 acres of the HSM, restoring areas degraded by fires, landslides, and changes in land use. This initiative  is designed to strengthen climate change adaptation, enhance ecosystem services, and increase carbon capture.

To ensure the reforestation effort’s success, the project utilizes native species adapted to the local environment, such as:

  • Queñua, chachacomo, and tasta: Ideal for Andean zones.
  • Aliso, pacaymono, and chalanque: Suitable for the cloud forest areas.

These species not only restore biodiversity but also reinforce the ecosystem’s integrity, providing vital habitats for local wildlife.

Achievements to date.

The project has already made a significant impact:

  • Over 367,000 native plants have been reforested, restoring key ecosystems.
  • Local communities, private companies, and Inca Trail tour operators, support this, highlighting the initiative’s collaborative nature.

Importance of the project

The reforestation effort has both environmental and cultural significance, positioning Machu Picchu as a global model of sustainability. It promotes responsible practices that balance the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Additionally, the project:

  • Protects vital resources like water.
  • Stabilizes soil in vulnerable areas.
  • Helps mitigate the effects of climate change in one of the world’s most visited regions.

A legacy for the future

The “One Million Trees for Machu Picchu” campaign not only revitalizes the ecosystem but also strengthens the connection between local communities and their Inca heritage. The Management Committee of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu officially reactivated the project for 2025. On January 8, the new phase was announced with the participation of all stakeholders, including Wayki Trek, which renewed its commitment to conserving the HSM and the Inca Trail Network.

Be part of the change!

Visitors and businesses can join the project through donations, volunteering, or promoting environmental education. Together, we can ensure Machu Picchu remains a place of unparalleled beauty and significance for the world.
