The Inca Trail is known not only for its archaeological and cultural value but also for its extraordinary botanical diversity. Along the various sections of the hike, trekkers pass through a wide variety of ecosystems, allowing them to observe the rich flora characteristic of the Andes and the high jungle of Peru.
Some typical plants that can be observed include:
Orchids:
The Inca Trail is home to more than 300 species of orchids. These flowers are especially abundant in the high jungle areas near Machu Picchu, where the humid climate and mild temperatures create an ideal habitat for them.
Bromeliads:
These epiphytic plants, which grow on other plants without harming them, are also common in the cloud forests along the trail. Their unique shapes and colors make them stand out in the landscape.
Mosses and ferns:
They are frequent in the wetter and shadier areas of the trail. The dense growth of mosses and ferns on rocks and trees creates an almost magical environment.
Queñua (Polylepis):
In the higher areas, above 3,500 meters above sea level, it is common to find the queñua tree. This hardy tree is key to Andean ecosystems as it withstands harsh cold and windy conditions.
These ecosystems provide a journey not only through Inca history but also through a unique display of biodiversity that changes with every step we take! So be prepare to take some amazing photos!
