The history of Cusco has a rich and complex narrative, woven through millennia, from its earliest inhabitants to its role as the capital of the Inca Empire and beyond, eventually becoming a symbolic modern tourist destination.

Ancestral Origins

According to ancient legends, Cusco was founded by the Ayar brothers, sent by the Sun, their father, to establish the center of the world. Historically, Cusco began as a modest settlement during the Early Intermediate Period (around 600-1000 AD), gradually growing in importance. The Killke people occupied the region from 900 to 1200 AD, leaving behind fascinating advancements as a testament to their skill and as a precursor to what was to come.

The heart of the Inca Empire

The transformation of Cusco into the beating heart of the Tawantinsuyu (the Four Regions in quechua), the Inca Empire, marked its golden age. Under the leadership of visionary rulers such as Pachacútec, the ninth Sapan Inca, Cusco expanded and was beautified, adopting a symbolic puma shape, with Sacsayhuamán as its head. Majestic temples were built, such as the Qoricancha, dedicated to worship the Sun, establishing Cusco not only as an administrative and political center but also as a spiritual one.

The Spanish Conquest

The arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century marked the beginning of the end of Inca dominance. The capture and subsequent execution of the Inca Atahualpa in Cajamarca paved the way for Francisco Pizarro to take Cusco in 1533. The conquerors were astonished by the city’s beauty and wealth, but they also began a process of destruction and reconstruction, overlaying colonial architecture on top of Inca foundations, a symbolic practice of their domination.

Renaissance and Recognition

After centuries as just another colonial city, Cusco experienced a renaissance in the 20th century when it was rediscovered as a site of global cultural and tourist significance. The declaration of Machu Picchu as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the designation of Cusco as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underscored its universal value.

Cusco Today

Today, Cusco is a vibrant melting pot of past and present, where ancestral traditions blend with the hustle and bustle of international tourism. Its architecture, a fusion of Inca and colonial styles, its festivals that combine Catholic and indigenous elements, and its people, who keep the languages and customs of their ancestors alive, make Cusco a living testament to cultural resilience and adaptation over the centuries.
